Coding a CNC Milling Machine

2014-2015

For this project students were expected to manufacture a component only provided to them as an engineering drawing. The project included making a 3D model of the diagram in the Siemens CAD Software NX and then programming a CNC Milling machine using two different methods.

  1. Manually using G-Code

  2. Using the NX-CAM capability

By using both of these methods, we became familiar with both the traditional way of coding a CNC machine and the modern technique of programming the machine using CAM software. The second method was used to manufacture the component on a real CNC machine. To verify precision before manufacture, the cutting process was simulated in NX. This created a model which was then transferred and measured in the software Vericut for accuracy.

The images above show the various stages in the project and the final product cut using the machine.
