Disassembly and Re-Design of a Common Household Item
2016-2017
Sustainability is an increasingly important issue in engineering. Raw materials continue to decline and fossil fuels cause further damage to our atmosphere. Because of this, making products eco-friendly as well as commercially successful is nothing short of essential.
The sustainable manufacturing module taught me how to analyse and re-design products to be more eco-friendly. As part of the coursework, teams of four disassembled a common household item to determine if it had been manufactured sustainably. My team was assigned to assess a Russel Hobbs iron.
The hand-in was a report broken into four main sections. My role was to evaluate how easy it was to disassemble the iron and suggest design improvements. My responsibilities included research, analysis and report writing. For those who are interested, our full report is available in PDF format.
