Cutting an Airplane Component
2016-2017
In my fourth year I chose a module with a project in manufacturing design and laser cutting. I had to design a manufacturing line for making an airplane component. The component needed to be manufactured quickly and accurately using a laser cutting process. I calculated the costs and time for manufacturing the part. The images below show my solution; an ABB robot arm equipped with a tool changing end effector. This would allow the robot
to switch between a laser cutter and a pneumatic gripping system. A laser sensor scans the part for defects and informs a technician if needed. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and achieved a high coursework mark of over 80%. If you are interested, the full report is available here for download.
