Jaguar Land Rover Express Car Jack

Creating a Product for Jaguar Land Rover

2016-2017

In this final year project I designed an accessory for a Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) car. The accessory had to fit into the JLR portfolio and fulfill a consumer need. I chose to re-design the car jack for elderly and disabled users. The final submission was a workbook demonstrating my design process and two posters which were evaluated by representatives from Jaguar Land Rover. Below are samples from my workbook showing development of the jack.

Design Philosophy

As the jack was primarily designed for elderly and disabled users, the design had to be easy to use. For this reason, I decided early on that the car jack would be automatic and minimize user effort. After exploring several concepts, I decided that the design would be pneumatic and be powered by micro gas cylinders (similar to a nitrous coffee machine). This would quickly lift the car and could be easily reloaded into the jack. An example of a cylinder is shown in the image to the right.

Ease to Use

Conventional jacks are placed under the car and then wound or pumped into place. This is often straining or inconvenient - particularly for disabled or elderly users. The Express Car Jack is slotted directly into the side the car chassis next to the wheels. A magnetic strip and a panel on the side of the car hold it in place. This design saves users from bending over to place the jack under the car. The jack is also lightweight as it is mostly manufactured from an aluminium composite.

Iconic Design

The jack's design is inspired by JLR's premium class of car, the new Ultimate Range Rover. Design features such as the stripes and curved metal base reference the design of that car. The materials and colours used match the interior of the Ultimate Range Rover, with brown, black or red leather highlights. Additionally, the profile of the jack mimics the shape of a Land Rover car. I added brushed copped nuts to contrast the white power coated surface of the jack, making the design eye catching.

Finished Posters

Below are the two final submissions for the coursework alongside some additional images. One of the posters is a promotional poster designed to attract potential customers. The second poster is an academic poster which explains the various features of the jack.
